Breast Cancer Patients- Treatment Choices and Needs

Coping with breast cancer can definitely be a challenge, whether you have been diagnosed yourself, or have a loved one who is dealing with the disease. However, breast cancer patients have more choices than ever before when it comes to treatment options, so here is some information that you'll want to keep in mind when you're meeting with your doctor, as well as some of the things you can do to prevent the condition.

One of the main things that breast cancer patients will want to consider when it comes to treatment is the severity of the condition. Tests like tissue sampling and mammograms serve to let a woman know if there are cancerous lumps or tumors in the breast, so the more often you have these tests done, the more likely you are to catch the cancer in its early stages. You may simply need to have an operation to remove the lump before it has a chance to split its cells and move to other parts of your body, or if the lump is small enough, you may be able to take certain medications or have a less invasive procedure done to get rid of the cancer. If the cancer is more advanced, some breast cancer patients choose to undergo chemotherapy, which kills the cancer cells in the body and reduces the risk of the cancer returning or spreading to other body parts. It is important to know, however, that chemotherapy is systemic, which means the whole body will be affected--not just the area that has been afflicted with cancer. Radiation is another procedure that is available to breast cancer patients, and this type of treatment is actually more comfortable for the patient than people may think.

In addition to the medical treatments that breast cancer patients need, there is also the matter of emotional support that is very necessary for healing. Going to counseling, so that patients can talk about their feelings about having cancer or their discomfort about certain treatments, is definitely beneficial. And, there are a number of support groups that you can join in your city or state that will give you a safe environment to voice all your feelings about living with cancer or being in remission. Some breast cancer patients may be angry or sad months or years after the initial diagnosis, and knowing that there are other people that share their pain will provide encouragement and strength. Keeping a journal has also proven to be beneficial for some patients, since it gives them the opportunity to take time and sort through feelings of loss due to breast removal surgery or chemotherapy.
